Harbatsiuk gains quarterfinals at Rio Del Oro

   Kiryl Harbatsiuk, a former Sacramento State star working his way back to the professional circuit after a serious bout with the flu, reached the quarterfinals of the $2,000 Rio Del Oro Open, NTRP, Senior Tournament in Sacramento.
   After receiving a first-round bye, the top-seeded Harbatsiuk defeated Blake Emery of Rancho Santa Margarita 6-3, 6-3 in the open division on the ex-Hornet's home courts.
   Harbatsiuk, a Belarus native ranked No. 765 in the world, will meet sixth-seeded Lovedeep Singh of Sacramento at 10 a.m. today. Singh advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jonathan Chen of Modesto.
  The winner of the Harbatsiuk-Singh match will play either Kevin Vieira of Folsom or Vahe Assadourian of Glendale, both of whom are unseeded, at 1 p.m. for a berth in next Saturday's final.
   Vieira knocked off fourth-seeded Zoltan Hites of Pleasanton 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, and Assadourian ousted fifth-seeded Joshua Prager of Yuba City 6-4, 6-4.
   In the bottom half of the draw, second-seeded Sherif Zaher of Folsom will take on seventh-seeded Erik Grotemeyer of Prunedale, and third-seeded Anton Stryhas will face Collin Altamirano of Yuba City. Zaher and Stryhas also starred at Sac State.
   In women's open singles, Karina Vyrlan of Sacramento crushed Danielle Jackson of Sparks, Nev., 6-0, 6-0 in round-robin play. Vyrlan and Jackson won the other two matches by default.
   Men's Challenger -- Unseeded Jimmy Wang, a former top-100 player from Taiwan who trains in Folsom, lost to top-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the $50,000 Singapore Challenger. Lu reached the final of the 2007 Sacramento Challenger, losing to Wayne Odesnik.
   Top-seeded John Paul Fruterro, a former Cal All-American living in San Jose, and Raven Klaasen of South Africa lost in one doubles semifinal, and Wang and countryman Tsung-Hua Yang fell in another.
   Tursunov update -- Dmitry Tursunov, a longtime Sacramento-area resident from Russia, is questionable for the BNP Paribas Open, Wednesday through March 18 in Indian Wells, with a strained tendon in his left wrist.
   Tursunov, ranked 60th in the world after reaching a career-high No. 20 in 2006, is right-handed but has a two-handed backhand.  
   Colleges -- Defending champions Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford will meet Sebastian Fanselow and Jenson Turner of Pepperdine today in the semifinals of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships in La Jolla.
   Klahn and Thacher, last year's NCAA runners-up, are trying to become the first team to repeat in the tournament since Stanford's Jared Palmer and Jonathan Stark in 1990 and 1991. ...    
   The No. 7 Cal women (7-4) beat No. 24 Pepperdine (5-4) 5-2 in Berkeley to end a four-match losing streak. No. 44 Tayler Davis, a junior from San Jose, earned the clinching point with a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Khunpak Issara in 3 hours, 15 minutes. ...
   The 71st-ranked Sac State women (7-5) lost to No. 29 Arizona (8-3) 5-2 in Tucson, Ariz. Earning points for the Hornets were Katharina Knoebl and Maria Meliuk at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. ...
   The UC Davis men (3-8) fell to Saint Mary's (4-7) 5-2 in Moraga. The Aggies received singles wins from Kyle Miller and Josh Albert at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
   The UC Davis women (3-10, 1-2 Big West Conference) dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 58 Long Beach State (8-3, 4-0). Kelly Chui and Layla Sanders pulled out singles victory for UCD at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
