Giant killer McGee routed in Aptos Challenger

James McGee's euphoria lasted less than 24 hours.
One day after staging an incredible comeback to shock fourth-seeded Ryan Harrison, the Irishman was routed by fellow qualifier Farrukh Dustov of Uzbekistan 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday in the second round of the $100,000 Comerica Bank Challenger at the Seascape Sports Club in Aptos, Calif.
"My opponent played great today and I didn't execute," McGee tweeted. "Good week overall but need to get better. Thanks for the savage support this week!"
The 6-foot-4 (1.93-meter) Dustov won 27 of 29 points (93 percent) on his first serve. He will face American wild card Tennys Sandgren in today's quarterfinals. Sandgren outlasted Yuichi Sugita of Japan 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Guido Pella of Argentina eliminated Brian Baker of the United States 6-4, 6-4. Baker was playing in his first tournament since undergoing knee surgery in January. He also missed most of six years (2005-11) while having five major operations.
Pella will meet Great Britain's Daniel Evans, who beat eighth-seeded Jimmy Wang 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Evans, only 5-foot-9 (1.75 meters), was the runner-up in last week's Vancouver Challenger to Vasek Pospisil of Canada.
Pella is one of four left-handers in the Comerica quarterfinals. The others are fifth-seeded Wayne Odesnik and Bradley Klahn of the United States and seventh-seeded Mischa Zverev, a Moscow native who plays for Germany.
USTA junior nationals -- Two Northern Californians, unseeded Collin Altamirano of Yuba City and Logan Staggs of Tracy, reached the quarterfinals of the USTA Boys 18 Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich. They are on opposite sides of the draw.
Taylor Townsend, who played for the Sacramento Capitals in World TeamTennis last month, advanced to the quarters of the USTA Girls 18 Nationals in San Diego.
In the boys 14s in San Antonio, third-seeded Conrad Russell of Palo Alto will take on second-seeded Maxwell Mendelsohn of Little Rock, Ark., in today's semifinals.
In the boys 12s in Little Rock, top-seeded Jenson Brooksby of Sacramento will meet sixth-seeded Nathan Han of Tulsa, Okla., in today's semis. The sixth-seeded pair of Brooksby and Scott Sculley of Churchville, Md., will play for the doubles title today against seventh-seeded William Grant of Santa Barbara and Garrett Johns of Atlanta.
