Volynets, Aidan Mayo reach Easter Bowl semis

   Katie Volynets of Walnut Creek and Aidan Mayo of Roseville have reached the semifinals in their age groups at the prestigious Easter Bowl in Indian Wells.
   Volynets, seeded fourth in the girls 14s, outclassed fifth-seeded Lea Ma of Dix Hills, N.Y., 6-2, 6-3 on Monday to set up a showdown against top-seeded Alexa Noel of Summit, N.J.
   Mayo, the top seed in the boys 12s, routed Nathan Kwon of Bakersfield 6-2, 6-0. Mayo will take on sixth-seeded Hunter Heck of New Brighton, Minn.
   In the girls 14 doubles final, fourth-seeded Sara Choy of San Francisco and Jillian Taggart of Fair Oaks will meet unseeded Naomi Cheong of Las Vegas and Sedona Gallagher of Henderson, Nev. 
   No. 12 seed Paul Barretto of Bel Tiburon and unseeded Jessi Muljat, 14, of Sacramento advanced to the second round of boys and girls 16 singles, respectively. But unseeded Keenan Mayo, Aidan's older brother, lost to top-seeded Oliver Crawford of Spartanburg, S.C., 6-0, 6-3 in the first round.
   Keenan Mayo will turn 15 on May 26, and Aidan Mayo will be 12 on May 14.
   Moving into the second round of the boys 18s were 14th-seeded Sam Riffice, 16, of Roseville and unseeded Cameron Klinger, 17, of Elk Grove and Alexander Keyser, 16, of Danville.
   Klinger upset ninth-seeded Liam Caruana of New Braunfels, Texas, 6-3, 6-3, and Keyser downed Victor Pham of Saratoga 6-1, 6-3.
   Stanford commit Sameer Kumar, seeded sixth in the boys 18s, fell to John Jorgeson of Bradenton, Fla., 6-1, 6-1.
   Fifth-seeded Michaela Gordon of Saratoga is scheduled to face qualifier Zoe Spence of Chicago in the first round of the girls 18s. Camille Favero of Sacramento lost to wild card Morgan Coppoc of Tulsa, Okla., 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the opening round.
