Newman captures USTA Senior doubles title

Judy Newman of Scotts Valley and Lisa Naumu of La Quinta won the 50-and-over doubles title in the USTA National Senior Women's Hard Court Championships.
The third-seeded pair upended top-seeded Eleanor Hammargren and Jennifer Lyons of San Clemente 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 on Saturday in La Jolla.
No. 1 seed Ros (Fairbank) Nideffer, 54, of San Diego won the singles title for the third time in four years. The two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist beat second-seeded Frances Chandler of Jackson, Tenn., 6-4, 6-0.
Fortunately for Newman and the rest of the doubles field, Nideffer did not enter that event. Nideffer won two women's doubles titles in the French Open (1981 and 1983).
Top-seeded Tina Karwasky of Glendale captured her fourth straight 60-and-over singles title, outlasting second-seeded Carolyn Nichols of Rancho Santa Fe 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in 3 hours, 12 minutes.
