Date-Krumm, 44, to open in Stockton Challenger

Japan will take the spotlight on the first day of the inaugural $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger in Stockton.
Kimiko Date-Krumm, a 44-year-old Japanese marvel, is scheduled to play sixth-seeded Julia Boserup of Newport Beach today following a 10 a.m. match at the University of the Pacific.
Date-Krumm reached a career-high No. 4 in the world in 1995, retired at the end of 1996 at age 26 and returned 12 years later. Boserup, 23, was the runner-up to Olivia Rogowska of Australia in last year's Sacramento Challenger.
Two other seeds -- No. 2 seed Eri Hozumi and No. 7 Mayo Hibi, both from Japan -- will be in action today. Hibi, 19, was born in Japan but has lived in California since she was 2 1/2. She won the 2013 Sacramento Challenger.
Also playing will be Jamie Loeb, who won the NCAA title in May as a sophomore at the University of North Carolina.
Melanie Oudin, the 2011 U.S. Open mixed doubles title with Jack Sock, will open in doubles with fellow American Jan Abaza. They are seeded third.
Maria Sanchez, who grew up in nearby Modesto, will team with Jessica Pegula today. They met in the singles final of the inaugural Sacramento Challenger in 2012, with Sanchez prevailing in three sets.
Top-seeded An-Sophie Mestach of Belgium, third-seeded Sanchez and fourth-seeded CiCi Bellis, 16, of Atherton will play their first-round singles matches on Wednesday.
Winners in the second round of qualifying on Monday included top seed Kristie Ahn, a former Stanford star, and Maegan Manasse, a Cal All-American. Manasse defeated Caroline Doyle, an All-American at rival Stanford, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Also, Jacqueline Cako lost an epic tiebreaker but rebounded to beat fellow American Tori Kinard, seeded seventh, 6-7 (17), 6-3, 6-4.
Stockton is part of the U.S. Open Wild Card Challenge with the $50,000 Challengers at the Gold River Racquet Club in the Sacramento area next week and in Lexington, Ky., from July 28 to Aug. 2. The American woman who earns the most WTA ranking points in two of the three tournaments will receive a wild card in the singles main draw of the U.S. Open, Aug. 31 to Sept. 13.
Tickets for the Stockton tournament can be purchased at stocktonchallenger.com or by calling the University of the Pacific box office at (209) 946-2474. Prices start at $5, and an all-tournament pass is available for $25.
The Stockton Challenger will be streamed live at procircuit.usta.com.
