Oudin tops eighth seed in Stockton Challenger

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Melanie Oudin, a U.S. Open quarterfinalist in 2009 who has battled health problems for the past two years, knocked off eighth-seeded Naomi Broady of Great Britain 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger at the University of the Pacific.
Oudin broke serve twice in the third set and held her own serve throughout the set.
"I thought I played really solid in the third set," Oudin said. "I took care of my service games and hit some good returns."
Broady, 6-foot-2 (1.89 meters), double-faulted six times in the first set, including four in one game, and nine times overall. She had five aces to none for Oudin, who's 5-foot-6 (1.68 meters).
Oudin will meet left-hander Sanaz Marand, who dismissed fellow American Jennifer Brady 6-2, 6-4, in today's quarterfinals.
The other quarterfinal matches are No. 1 seed An-Sophie Mestach of Belgium against No. 7 Mayo Hibi of Japan, 44-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan vs. 5-foot-3 (1.61-meter) wild card Danielle Lao of the United States and No. 5 Nao Hibino of Japan against Amandine Hesse of France.
