Grand Slam boys champs advance in Sacramento qualies

Reigning Grand Slam boys champions Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka, both 18-year-old Americans, won their first-round qualifying matches on Saturday in the $100,000 Sacramento Pro Circuit Challenger at the Natomas Racquet Club.
The sixth-seeded Paul, who captured the French Open title in June, outclassed Dennis Nevolo, a 25-year-old former All-American at the University of Illinois, 6-3, 6-4.
The 6-foot-11 (2.11-meter) Opelka, who won the Wimbledon crown in July, topped Evan King, a 23-year-old former All-American at the University of Michigan, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Paul joined John McEnroe (1977) and Bjorn Fratangelo (2011) as the only Americans to win the French Open boys singles title.
Paul, from Boca Raton, Fla., will play Ruben Gonzales, 30, of the Philippines today. Opelka, from Palm Coast, Fla., will face 32-year-old Dane Frederik Nielsen, the 2012 Wimbledon men's doubles champion with Jonathan Marray of Great Britain.
Also advancing on Saturday were Cal juniors Andre Goransson and Florian Lakat and Stanford sophomore Tom Fawcett, who's 6-foot-6 (1.98 meters). Lakat beat Kiryl Harbatsiuk, a 27-year-old former Sacramento State star from Belarus, 6-2, 6-4.
Admission is free today, $5 daily from Monday through Thursday, $10 for Friday's quarterfinals, and $15 daily for Saturday's semifinals and next Sunday's finals.
All-tournament and semifinal-final packages cost $50 and $20, respectively. Admission is free for youths 17 and under throughout the tournament and for seniors 60 and over Monday through Thursday.
